How To Cut A Hole In A Wall And Install A Window

  1. Hi,

    I'yard thinking of cut in a new window on the side of my house (UPVC double glazed blazon). I'thou pretty adept at DIY and accept installed enough of Widows, merely never actually cutting a new opening for one. And then was hoping someone would give their stance on how I intend to do it;

The House is double cake construction with a cavity in the middle. Then I will outset cutting the hole for the Lintel in the outer wall and install information technology (I was thinking of using a Steel L shape Cat nic, only not sure if a std Lintel is best??) One time thats in, I'll cut the rest of the outer wall to a size slightly smaller that the dimensions of the Window. (I'll likewise allow enough space for a concrete sill for the window to sit on.)
With that washed, I can so do the same on the inside, just this time the opening volition be slightly larger than the Window dimensions, this is so the window can just upwardly against the outer wall.
The window volition be secured using the std clips and drilled into the inner wall.
The rest is then downward to sealing and cosmetics.

I capeesh thats a very brief run down, but I'chiliad sure you become the idea. Do you run across any flaws in my programme? What Lintels would you lot become for? Is the method of cutting 2 different size openings (inner and outer) normal practice?

    Thanks in advance

  2. i would get a builder round to give you ideas and go over what y'all demand as the end wall would be load bearing from the roof.
  3. Hello, I think I'd feel a little awkward request a builder to come and await at the task without any intention of giving him / her work. I'm comfortable with the fact the wall is load bearing every bit I accept the selection of using Acros if needed. but the fact I'll install the Lintel first should exist good enough.
  4. That's not how you do it. The only Windows that normally butt upwardly to the outer foliage with a different sized opening inside are box sashes. Assuming you are not having an ext lintel you use a catnic that supports both inner and outer and likewise in upshot provides the crenel tray. Window goes into outer leaf. Cavity gets closed and reveals fabricated good.https://www.travisperkins.co.uk/True cat...5Cw4lYRRZRl1hV-77nZq0aAsWp8P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds
  5. Hullo Mr Rusty, Thanks for the info. That makes perfect sense. The consequence I have is that all the other Windows in the firm announced to have been installed in the method I accept described. I know this, because I have been irresolute out the one-time UPVC windows for new. So they all butt up to the outer leaf.
If I install this window as you depict then I think it volition look odd from the outside as the window volition sit down further out. ie information technology will be less recessed than the others.
So I guess the question is, is there any reason why I cannot use this method all be it non the standard mode?

    Thanks once more

  6. Your existing windows may have been installed in that way because they replaced former box sash windows, and I take seen this before and common practice, but as a new fit cutting out it could be done, simply although it wouldn't lucifer I would fit to outer bricks leaving 40-50mm of brick showing.
  7. Thanks Baxi Male child, my concern is how this volition look as there is some other window (for another room) close by which has ~100mm of brick (skimmed block) showing. Also, I think the Concrete sill would stop up being farther out using the normal method?

Is at that place anything wrong with doing it the way I'chiliad thinking of doing it even though its not standard practice?

    Thanks

  8. No, at that place'south nothing wrong with doing every bit yous propose, is the exterior rendered so existence every bit you stated it was double cake construction?
  9. Thats right, it is Wet Dashed which will obviously exist redone one time the window is in. Thanks
